Müller & Troschel (1842) transferred Ophiura scutellatum Grube, 1840 to their new genus Ophionyx. Later, they synonymized Ophionyx with Ophiothrix (Müller & Troshcel 1843). The description of the single specimen strongly suggests that it was a juvenile. They also synonymized it with a specimen observed by Erdl (1842) and named Ophiura echinata. From his pl. 2 fig. 11 it is clear that it was an Ophiothrix, not an Ophiura. Thus, he most likely meant Asterias echinata Delle Chiaje, 1828, which is currently accepted as Ophiothrix fragilis, not Ophiura echinata Lamarck, 1816, which currently is accepted as Ophiocoma echinata.
