Nomenclature This name was used for several different species by various authors. Lamarck (1816) distinguished it from A. muricatum. Lyman (1882) synonymized both but preferred A. costosum over A. muricatum. Later authors abandoned the name A. costosum in favour or A. muricatum. Seba's work is regarded as nomenclaturally unavailable because his nomenclature was not consistently binominal. Since Lamarck described A. costosum (referring it to Linck), he might be considered the authority of the name, but acc. to Lyman (1882), Lamarck's use of the name costosum was not the same as Seba's. [details]

Nomenclature The name can be traced back to Linck (1733: De stellis marinis), which is unavailable as pre-Linnean.
