Homonymy If not a misspelling of the original usage, Euphrosyne would in any case be a junior homonym to Euphrosyne Meigen 1800 in Diptera.  [details]

Spelling Euphrosyne is the usual transliterated spelling of the name of the Greek Goddess, but Lamarck (1818) used Euphrosine in his original description, when he copied Savigny's text on Euphrosyne. The letter Y was absent in old Latin, and rare subsequently, so evidently Lamarck deliberately preferred a spelling replacing the 'y' with an 'i'. Alternatively, Lamarck knew Euphrosyne was preoccupied. Many later authors disregarded Lamarck's spelling and used Euphrosyne instead, perhaps following Savigny's earlier use in the 'Description de l'Égypte', a then unpublished manuscript. But Euphrosyne for Polychaeta would be unusable as a junior homonym, so Lamarck's change to Euphrosine has saved the name from oblivion. [details]
