Status With some reservations, the discussion given by Fauchald (1992: 155) on "Eunice gigantea auctores" (as Fauchald represents the concept) is still valuable for understanding the status of the name Eunice gigantea.
Inter alia Fauchald dismisses the Linnaeus name of 'Nereis gigantea' (see the entry for Nereis gigantea Linnaeus, 1758) as indeterminable (although it is referring to an amphinomid named by Seba as Millepoda marina amboensis), The unpublished usage in the Paris museum of 'Nereis gigantea' for a Eunicid surely could not be confused with it, but we cannot tell two centuries later if the name was a new invention, or a usage adopting Linnaeus. Most likely the earlier Linnaean name should be treated as having no connection to Lamarck's Leodice gigantea since Lamarck does not mention it (including no mention within Lycoris, his genus name for Nereis species). Lamarck's colleague Savigny (1822) refers Nereis gigantea Linnaeus to Pleione carunculata [Hermodice carunculata in Amphinomidae]. [details]

Authority Malmgren (1867) credits Cuvier with the name Eunice gigantea, but this is not correct (as extensively discussed by Fauchald (1992: 4 & 155)). The name arose as 'Nereis gigantea' assigned on a museum label to a Paris Museum specimen, but Cuvier never published the name. Lamarck (1818) took Savigny's MS name of Leodice gigantea and published it as Leodice gigantea. All Eunice 'gigantea' usages arise from this first published use, although the authors involved may instead incorrectly attribute the name to Cuvier.
