The species M. limosus was described by Hatai (1898) from Tokyo under the name of Vermiculus limosus. Unfortunately Ferronnière (1899: p.248) also described a Vermiculus limosus from the French Loire estuary. He soon found out (during the printing process of his paper) that Hatai described a species with the same name and changed it in his correction paragraph on p.294 into Vermiculus fluviatilis. However, Ferronnière species’ is now known to be synonymous to Monopylephorus rubroniveus.
