Nomenclature The two varieties erected by Poléjaeff, 1884 have not been evaluated, which would have had influence on the removal of the homonymy of Ircinia dendroides by erecting a nomen novum for Cacospongia dendroides. The varieties may both be different species from C.dendroides, but if one of the varieties conforms to the type of C.dendroides, then its name could have been used to replace the preoccupied name dendroides. In the absence of reliable information on their status Van Soest et al. erected Ircinia polejaeffi which may eventually become a junior synonym. A further complication is that one of Polejaeff's varieties must be the typical variety and that would have to carry the name C. dendroides var. dendroides. Since var. dura was mentioned first by Poléjaeff it is logical to consider dura the typical variety, which then is a junior synonym of the new name Ircinia poléjaeffi[details]
