Plumage: above mottled brownish grey; below whitish with light streaking on head and neck; whitish rump patch narrowing into back; tail barred black on white; distinct white superciliary line; breeding dress mottled black and rich brown; head, neck and whole underside reddish chestnut. Bare parts: iris brown; bill long and recurved, black with orange-pink, pinkish yellow or pink basal half; feet and legs greyish-green, bluish grey to blackish.
