Etymology Not stated, uncertain. The name Notophycus is composed by the combining form of Greek origin noto-, maybe from the Greek word nôton and meaning 'back', or from the Greek word Notos or Notus, designating the god of the South Wind and, by extention, the 'south', and the Greek word phycos, meaning 'seaweed'. It could be a reference to the southern origin of the genus, or to the fact that the type specimens were collected from washings of red algae, on which the specimens lived.  [details]
