Etymology Not stated in the original description. The generic epithet Greeffia is named after Richard Greeff (b. Elberfeld, 14 March 1829; d. Marburg, 30 August 1892), German zoologist and author of the genus Nauphanta Greeff, 1876, a name preoccupied by Nauphanta Kinberg, 1865, and replaced by Greeffia McIntosh, 1885. It is composed by the name 'Greeff' followed by the suffix -ia, feminine form of -ius and added to a noun to form an adjective of that noun indicating 'made of' or 'belonging to' that noun, maybe to indicate that the genus had been originally described by Greeff. This strange apparent continued usage of the unavailable (preoccupied) Nauphanta as a subgenus should be ignored, as McIntosh on the next line of p.182 introduces his new species as Greeffia oahuensis. On the next page there is a usage of Alciopa (Halodora), again debatable as Halodora Greeff is an unnecessary replacement name, but this instance seems to be an intentional usage as a subgenus.
