Taxonomy First described as Spiophanes tenuis by Verrill (1879). In 1882, Verrill published it as Prionospio tenuis. In 1883,...
Taxonomy First described as Spiophanes tenuis by Verrill (1879). In 1882, Verrill published it as Prionospio tenuis. In 1883, Fewkes, published descriptions of planktonic larvae that he identified as Prionospio tenuis Verrill. Pettibone (1954) examined Verrill's types and referred P. tenuis to Prionospio malmgreni. Maciolek (1985) referred it to P. steenstrupi and cites Pettibone (1954). Hartman (1942) paper on the YPMH types indicated the types of P. tenuis were in the USNM. Hartman (1944) in her paper on Verrill's unpublished plates has P. tenuis on Plate 19, as figure 7. This shows dorsal and lateral views of the species which has a classic steenstrupi branchial pattern. [analysis by James Blake] [details]
