Nomenclature The status of this recombination based on Malacoceros longirostris Quatrefages has long been misunderstood. Saint-Joseph (1894) did not author Nerine longirostris as the new taxon "Nerine longirostris Saint-Joseph", as wrongly listed in the Hartman catalogue (p.381). Nerine longirostris is only a subsequent usage of Quatrefages' taxon, as recombined in Nerine, and it is not a secondary homonym to Malacoceros longirostris Quatrefages, 1843 as erroneously stated in Pettibone (1963) and repeated by Foster (1971) and Maciolek (1987). As it is not an original name it is not in need of a replacement name. Nerinides cantabra Rioja 1919 has been erroneously used as if a replacement name, probably by misinterpretation of the synonymy of Fauvel (1927:31). Saint-Joseph (1894:74) simply applied Quatrefages' existing name as the identification of the specimen he had, and gave a description. This is the same as standard practice today. Saint-Joseph's report was clearly understood and explained by Southern (1914:47). The belief this usage was unrelated to Quatrefages's species probably arises because Mesnil (1896) later suggested Nerine longirostris sensu Saint-Joseph (said to be non Quatrefages) as the type species of Nerinides. This is a different problem. [details]
