Etymology Not stated in the original description. The specific epithet microcephala is a New Latin adjective derived from the Ancient Greek, meaning 'having a very small head', and refers presumably to the small size of the prostomium of the species: "Lobus cephalicus minimus [...] L'extrême petitesse de son lobe céphalique et la briéveté de ses antennes lui donnent une apparence toute spéciale" (Claparède, 1870: 462). [details]

Taxonomy Moved to different genus by Augener (1910: 233, 235; to Pterocirrus), and Hartman (1959: 150, 166; to Sige).

Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Claparède (1870: 462): "Corpus longitudine 80mm, latitudine 3mm, subteres, antice et postice attenuatum, viride. Lobus cephalicus minimus, suborbicularis, oculis duobus mediocribus, antennis brevissimis.[details]

Distribution Mediterranean Sea: Gulf of Naples (Italy); Atlantic Ocean: Roscoff (France). [details]

Editor's comment The illustration of the species provided by Claparède (1870: plage IX fig. 3) shows an enlarged ventral tentacular cirri in segment 2, with a foliose ventral outgrowth. This feature is typical of the genus Pterocirrus, and seems to confirm that the species should be included in this genus. Whether it is a valid species or not, requires further investigation. [details]
