Type specimen  This species is one of the many ostracod species poorly described and illustrated in the 19th Century, which was posteriorly recorded from many distant localities in the world oceans. Its identity is still uncertain, because no holotype nor lectotype has been designated so far. Several authors have identified trachyleberidid spiny valves as Cythere melobesioides, also with distinct generic assignments (e.g., Apatihowella, Echinocythereis, Henryhowella). However a definitive generic assignment for this species must await a lectotype or neotype designation. [details]

Type specimen Mazzini (2005) erroneously called a specimen collected during the HMS Challenger Expedition and putatively studied by Brady (1880) as "hololectotype" of 'Cythere' melobesioides, but no lectotype has ever been designated for this species. Since this species was described by Brady (1869), a specimen collected latter could not be chosen as a lectotype. [details]
