Nomenclature Lamarck (1801, p. 329) noted "Thalassema rupium. n. Lumbricus thalassema. Lin. Pall. Spicil. Zool. 10, p. 10, t. 1, f. 7....
Nomenclature Lamarck (1801, p. 329) noted "Thalassema rupium. n. Lumbricus thalassema. Lin. Pall. Spicil. Zool. 10, p. 10, t. 1, f. 7. Encycl. pl. 35, f. 3–7," indicating that Thalassema rupium was published as a junior synonym of Lumbricus thalassema (currently accepted as Thalassema thalassema). However, "p. 10, t. 1, f. 7" of Pallas's "Spicil. Zool. 10" (Pallas 1774) represents the description and the figure of Lumbricus edulis (currently as Siphonosoma cumanense, a sipunculan), not that of Lumbricus thalassema. Bosc (1802, p. 225) treated Thalassema rupium as a valid name and gave a bibliographic reference to the correct figure of the Lumbricus thalassema ("Spicil Zool. 10. tab. 1. fig. 6") for it. Savigny (1822, p. 102), on the other hand, treated Thalassema rupium as a junior synonym of Thalassema vulgaris (currently as Echiurus echiurus) without explanation. It is not known why such confusion happened amongst the authors. Here, I follow the Bosc's (1802) interpretation, suggesting that Lamarck (1801) simply made a mistake on the page and the figure number. Thalassema rupium is available since Lamarck (1801) according to Article 11.6.1 of the Code (ICZN 1999), because Bosc (1802) once treated this name as valid. [details]
