Taxonomy Perkins (1984) moved most Hypsicomus species to Notaulax and revised Notaulax to contain species with abdominal paleate setae and elongate collar segment (setiger 1) fascicles. Fitzhugh (1989) states that “Notaulax resembles Hypsicomus and Anamobaea in the occurrence of simple radiolar eyes and abdominal paleate setae. The genus is distinctive in the arrangement of collar setae, presence of superior thoracic spinelike notosetae, and the long branchial base flanges." [details]

Type designation Fitzhugh (1989:75) notes that the type species is Notaulax n. sp. Tauber, 1879 = Notaulax rectangulata Levinsen, 1883. As Tauber didn't name his single species of his new genus the type designation must be by subsequent designation, rather than by monotypy, even although just one objective taxon is being considered monotypically subsequently! [details]
