Etymology The specific epithet anophthalma is derived from the Greek word anophthalmos (an- 'an'- + ophthalmos, 'eye'), meaning 'without eyes', and refers to the absence of eyes that characterizes the species.  [details]

Habitat Fine sand with Cymodocea nodosa Ascherson and some stalks of Caulerpa prolifera Lamouroux and Zostera nana Roth, at 0.4 m depth.  [details]

Publication date The species is often cited as having been published in 1989, but the publication date is here considered as 1990. Volume XVI of Oebalia, which includes the description of Pionosyllis anophthalma, is stated to correspond to years 1989-90. However, in the bibliography of the description, is cited a paper published in 1990: "SAN MARTÍN G. (1990) - Eusyllinae (Syllidae, Polychaeta) from Cuba and Gulf of Mexico. Bull. Mar. Sci., 46 (3): 590-619." As a paper published in 1989 could barely provide the full citation, including pagination, of a paper published in 1990, the publication date of Pionosyllis anophthalma is here considered as being 1990.  [details]
