Taxonomic remark The original spelling cardiocolum was given by Manter (1947), who included no etymology, but appears to have treated it as an adjective, even though it appears to have been derived from cardio + the suffix -icola (a masculine noun) . It was emended to cardicola (omitting an 'o') by Short (1953), who transferred it to the genus Cardiocola, which is masculine in gender. Yamaguti (1971) followed Short and considered that 'cola' is a substantive not subject to adjectival inflexion. Nevertheless, Martin (1960) also treated the specific name as an adjective and made it agree in gender with the generic name. It is difficult to determine what the correct name should be, but following Manter's lead, Martin's view is followed here. DIG  [details]
