Summary. Chaetopterus luteus Stimpson, 1855 (Polychaeta: Chaetopteridae) (type locality, Port Jackson, Australia) is recorded from the material collected at northern Nanao Bay, Noto Peninsula, Sea of Japan. This is the first record of this species outside type locality. The species is 8-20 mm in length, 3-4 mm in width for 20-28 chaetigers (A 9 + B 5 + C 6 - 14). It has neuropodium in A 9 and neuropodial appendage on dorso-lateral lobe of anterior region C neuropodia. In region-A, the ventral shield length is slightly longer than width at A 5 (length/width 1.2-14, average 1.38). The number of teeth on uncini in each chaetigers are 7 or 8 in A 9 and B 1 - B 5 neuropodia, 7- 8 in ventral lobe and 10 or 11 in dorso-lateral lobe in anterior region C neuropodia. The tube of the species is nearly straight or irregular U shaped, are constructed by very thin mucous inner layer and outer layer covered with fine mud. This species is compared to other 9 Japanese species, particularly on the tube characters. The key to Japanese species is revised.
