Distribution Distribution: tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Indian, and Western Pacific. Moderately elongate and compressed. A pair of barbels on hyoid. Dorsal fin with 4-6 spines; soft rays 26-38. Anal fin spines 4, short; soft rays 13-17. Subabdominal pelvic fin. One spinelike ray in pelvic fin; soft rays 6. Caudal rays 16; branched. Scales in lateral line about 33-38. Banchiostegal rays 4. Gillrakers 11-21. Supramaxillae 2. Epurals 3. Subocular shelf, ortbitosphenoid, and basisphenoid present. Vertebrae usually 29 or 30. Attains 38 cm maximum length. Usually found in depths between 180 and 640 m.  [details]
