Publication date Publication date may be seen as 1882 (eg BHL metadata), and in Verrill's 1885 new species description he cites the earlier works of Verrill, Trans. Conn. Acad., vol. iv, pi. 23, fig. 4, 1881, and Verrill, Report U. S. Fish Com. for 1883, [p. 22], pi. 41, fig. 181, 1885. However, mentions of the name in the 1881 work have not been found. A reliable modern review of the genus Notophyllum cites the date for N. americanum as 1885 (Kato & Pleijel, 2002), as does Zoological Record for 1885
