Taxonomy Mackie’s (1984) re-definition of P. cirrifera includes branchiae on chaetigers 2-7, cirriform only on chaetigers 2 and 7,...
Taxonomy Mackie’s (1984) re-definition of P. cirrifera includes branchiae on chaetigers 2-7, cirriform only on chaetigers 2 and 7, branchiae shorter, more triangular, and ciliated on the segments between the first and last branchiae, sabre chaetae on chaetiger 10 and dorsal crests from chaetiger 11. Mackie stated these characters matched the original and early subsequent descriptions. His characterisation has apparently not been challenged since, and widespread records of P. cirrifera outside Europe probably are misidentifications that should be referred to other species with all simple cirriform branchiae.
At the same type Maciolek (1985) investigated and redescribed (type is missing) P. cirrifera, reporting it as P (minuspio) cirrifera. In her study "those specimens which lack [interparapodial] pouches are referred to P. cirrifera, in accordance with the original description, while those which have this structure are considered to represent a separate species" [details]
