Authority According to McIntosh (1922: 165) the species (McIntosh does not give a name) "was first described by H. Martin Kähler (1754) as a polyp which perforated stones, though Linnnaeus subsequently placed it under the terebellids". This was pre-Linnaean nomenclature biology. The publication details for Kähler's work are abbreviated in McIntosh, and elsewhere, and not readily interpreted, so the work has not yet been located for WoRMS [details]

Etymology Terebella lapidaria is named (with feminine suffix) from the adjective lapidarius -a -um, meaning belonging to stones. [details]

Introduced species remark It seems remarkable that a European species first named by Linnaeus in 1767 is regarded as introduced to Ireland. The basis of this report has not been checked but would merit investigation. [details]
