Spelling Original spelling was Askonema, but this was changed to Asconema by Schmidt, 1880. This unjustfied emendation of Kent's Askonema became in prevailing usage after 1880 and Askonema was not used after 1872 (see Gray, 1872:458), with a single exception (De Laubenfels, 1936: 190). This is an unfortunate exception because it prevents the use of ICZN article 23.9.2 for the suppression of Askonema. The only solution is to submit a case to the ICZN under article 23.9.3 as the name Asconema is in prevailing use. To date (2021) this has not been attempted. [details]
