Taxonomy The characters of the type species of Syringella Schmidt, 1868, i.e. Raspailia syringella Schmidt, 1868 were misinterpreted by Ridley (1884). The type species is now assigned to the genus Suberites. Schmidt (1868) assigned his species to Raspailia but at the same time erected a new genus Syringella for this deviating Raspailia species. In modern terms the action of assigning a single species to two different genera cannot be condoned. Moreover, the name Syringella was preoccupied by Syringella Agassiz, 1841 (Echinodermata), making the story largely academic. The suberitid Syringella syringella is transferred to Suberites syringella. Ridley's (1884) misconception of Syringella, followed by several later authors, has been replaced by the (sub-)genus Parasyringella Topsent, 1928. For further information see Hooper, 2002: 478.
