Taxonomy If this is not the same species as Pallas' Spongia tupha it would be a junior primary homonym, which would have to be replaced by a nomen novum. So far (2018) authors have taken the view that Spongia tupha sensu Pallas, 1766 is incertae sedis and not the same species as that of Von Martens. However, the litttle we know of Pallas' sponge (short description, Mediterranean origin, drawing in Pallas pl. 14 fig. 7, and Von Martens' use of the author-name combination Spongia tupha Pallas) is not in conflict with the hypothesis that the two indeed do concern the same species. That would mean there is only a single Spongia tupha with Pallas, 1766 as author and year. We accordingly adopt this new conclusion here, but retain Von Martens' record from the Adriatic) as an unaccepted junior synonym to acknowledge the many records of the species with Martens as author. [details]
