Nomenclature The binomen Utriculopsis vitrea M. Sars, 1870 was described as "nov. gen. et sp." and is therefore not a new combination of Bulla vitrea M. Sars, 1866. Both are however based on, and objective synonyms of Philine laevissima M. Sars, 1859.

Schiøtte (1998) wrote that M. Sars (1866) changed the name from laevissima to vitrea because of homonymy with Bulla laevissima Bellardi, 1854, but this is not mentioned in Sars' text. Bulla laevissima Bellardi, 1854, an Eocene fossil from Egypt, is not a Philine, so that it is not so clear why the earlier name Philine laevissima M. Sars, 1859 was considered invalid by Ohnheiser & Malaquias (2013) [details]
