Validity This combination is used by Forskål (1775) to describe the habitus of a symbiont crab (Cancer tridentatus Forskål, 1775 accepted as Domecia hispida Eydoux & Souleyet, 1842). There is an extensive description of the crab, but not of the sponge. However, the combination Spongia violacea is a senior primary homonym of Spongia violacea Lévi, 1969. A nomen nudum is not an available name and does not enter into homonymy (ICZN 1999: 111). Since the senior name is without illustration and no material has survived, there is no likelihood that the identity of the sponge will ever be determined. Forskål's name is thus permanently invalid and Lévi's name is valid. [details]
