Nomenclature The gender of the name Thorecta with its ending of ‘-a’ presumes the name to be feminine. However, Wiedenmayer (1977: 70) suggested that Thorecta must be male, because it was not originally a correct Greek word (it derives from Thorectes = warrior with a breastplate). No other meaning can be found to apply to the latinized word 'thorecta'. Species assigned to Thorecta by its first author Von Lendenfeld (1888, 1889) overwhelmingly are masculine supporting Wiedenmayer's suggestion, excepting the three varieties of the type species T.exemplum, var. prima, secunda and tertia, which indeed confound the masculine gender of the genus name. This decision goes against Santos et al.'s (2010) suggestion to declare the gender of Thorecta as feminine.  [details]
