Type material Ridley & Dendy (1886, 1887) described two specimens, one is an Alert specimen from the Prince of Wales Channel, Torres Straits, unnamed by Ridley (1884) (as Acanthella sp.), a second was collected by the Challenger Exped. from a nearby locality. Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994: 78) listed a 'Alert' specimen as 'holotype', specimen BMNH 1921.11.7.100, without mentioning the Challenger specimen. Hooper & Lévi (1993: 1415) also gave this type citation, but in a table (table 3) on p. 1417 they listed the Challenger specimen BMNH 1887.5.2.23 as 'holotype'; moreover, in Fig. 14G they show a photograph of BMNH 1887.5.2.23 and call this holotype. Alvarez & Hooper (2010: 17) revisited the type status and indicated BMNH 1887.5.2.23, collected by the Alert as the holotype, referring BMNH 1921.11.7.100 as holotype of A. cavernosa Dendy, 1922 collected from the Amirantes. From the BMNH specimen website we learn (2020) that the only specimen currently extant is the Challlenger Exped. specimen BMNH 1887.5.2.23, assigned here lectotype status. There is a slide of the lectotype in the Paris Museum, MNHN LBIM DCL 208L. The Alert specimen, here assigned paralectotype status is apparently no longer extant. [details]
