Validity Forskål (1775) used this combination to describe the habitus of a symbiont crab (Cancer tridentatus Forskål, 1775 accepted as Domecia hispida Eydoux & Souleyet, 1842). Forskål gave an extensive description of the crab, but no information at all of the sponge, making it a nomen nudum. The combination Spongia violacea is a senior primary homonym of the present Spongia violacea Lévi, 1969. A nomen nudum is not an available name and does not enter into homonymy (ICZN 1999: 111). Since the senior name is without illustration and no material has survived, there is no likelihood that the identity of the sponge will ever be determined. Forskål's name is thus permanently invalid and Lévi's name is valid. [details]From other sources
