Taxonomy Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994) treated this records as if Carter described a new species, but Carter refered clearly to Schmidt's Vioa johnstonii from the Adriatic. It is thus merely a misapplication. They reassigned this to Cliona carteri Ridley, 1881.
