Taxonomy Vosmaer (1911, pp. 26-27) describing and discussing the Spirastrella specimens collected by the Siboga Expedition took it upon himself to revise all species assigned to Spirastrella known at the time. He arrived at an unprecedented conclusion that about 30 species, from all parts of the world oceans, in his opinion belonged to a single species Spirastrella pupurea (Lamarck, 1815 as Alcyonium) (currently Spheciospongia purpurea). He acknowledged the variability of this 'species' by erecting 7 tropi (single term: tropus), an infraspecific taxonomic unit that is not recognized by current rules of the ICZN (cf. art. 45.6). The Aphia database has no taxon category 'tropus', so we can only use a trinomen at the level of 'subspecies' to catalogue these taxa). Vosmaer expressly refuted the use of 'variety' or 'forma' for his tropi. Moreover, these tropus names are also junior synonyms of the eldest names of the species assigned to the tropi by Vosmaer, Since the ICZN does not recognize tropi, the names of Vosmaer are unavailable and we will list them only for completeness sake. [details]

Synonymy The tropus 'glaebosa' was assigned three taxa by Vosmaer (1911: 27), Suberites inconstans var. globosa Dendy, 1887, Suberites inconstans var. maeandrina Dendy, 1887 and Hymeniacidon angulata Bowerbank, 1872 (currently Spirastrella cunctatrix Schmidt, 1868), The lattter of the three should replace the name 'glaebosa' as it is the eldest. We link the present taxon name to Spirastrella cunctatrix but the name 'glaebosa' is unavailable. [details]
