Etymology Not stated. Genus evidently named from Barantolla near Calcutta, India, the type locality of the type species of the genus, Barantolla sculpta Southern, 1921. The species was found in brackish pools of lowered salinity near the salt lake at Barantolla. As Southern used a feminine suffix for his species name he regarded the genus as feminine. [details]

Diagnosis Prostomium oval to conical, with terminal palpode; eyes present or absent. Thorax with achaetous peristomium, 11 setigers; neurosetae present or absent on setiger 1. Notosetae of setigers 2-6 with capillaries only; setiger 7 with mixed fascicles or with hooks only. Neuropodia with capillaries only through setigers 6-8, rest with hooks only. Branchiae present or absent, when present with 3 or more lobes. Pygidium without appendages.  [details]
