Taxonomy Rafinesque had a family Brancephia for annelids with branchiae on the head or anterior body, which contained subfamily Brancheporea for annelids with branchiae on anterior body. He stated Brancheporea had four genera, Pasithoe, Achenusia, Plyntheria, Strophadea, all authored by him, but he gives no descriptions, and names no species. McIntosh (1915:133) mentions two MS binominal names of Montagu, using Pasithoe as the genus. Only by inference can these unpublished names be linked to Rafinesque's Pasithoe, but it seems a reasonable assumption. McIntosh states the MS drawings resemble Nerine, but later he (rightly) does not include Pasithoe itself as a synonym of Nerine (Pasithoe would be senior, but as it had no original species Montagu's unpublished apparent usage was speculative and has no relevance) [details]
