Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Kinberg (1866: 253): "Lobus cephalicus deplanatus, ad segmentum buccale et segmentum 1 et 2 adhaerens; oculi 4; tentaculum singulum; antennae 2, papillaeformes; cirri tentaculares 2, longissimi; branchiae cirrosae basi compressa; setae pedum paris quinti orbiculatae, apice brevi, inclinato, pedum reliquorum simplices, limbatae acutae et uncinatae robustae.[details]

Editor's comment Perialla Kinberg, 1866 is regarded by several authors as a senior subjective synonym to Boccardia, a widely used name, and in the interests of stability the synonymy has never been enforced (e.g., Blake, 1983). Article 23.9 of the 4th edition of the ICZN code now permits reversal of precedence of Perialla and Boccardia, but it appears no one has taken this action [details]

Etymology Not stated. Probably named after Perialla, the priestess of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi cited by Herodotus (c. 484 BC - c. 425 BC) in his work 'Histories'. [details]

Synonymy Perialla Kinberg, 1866 has been regarded by several different authors as being a senior subjective synonym of Boccardia Carazzi, 1893, a widely used name as stated in the above "Editor's comment". However, article 23.9 of the 4th edition of the ICZN cannot be applied in order to reverse the precedence of Perialla and Boccardia, as one of the two conditions of the article does not apply, due to the use of the senior synonym as valid after 1899 (Kinberg, 1910: 63). [details]
