The specific epithet crassifilis is composed by the Latin adjective crassi, plural of crassus and meaning 'thick' or 'gross', and the Latin noun filis, plural of filum and meaning 'thread', 'string' or 'filament', and presumably refers to the presence of thick filiform appendages in the species, such as the "large, prehensile tentacles, which are thick and transversely grooved at the base and in the contracted state" and the "Four pairs of stout [...] gills [...] about as thick as the cephalic tentacles and equal in length the anterior 18 to 22 segments" (Moore, 1923: 189). [details]
