Editor's comment Although the figure of Neolipobranchius glabrus looks like an anterior fragment of a longer individual without a pygidium, particularly as the posterior end is "smoothly rounded without processes", the authors report 16 specimens from one station, all apparently with 21 segments. [details]

Identification Blake (2015: 89) determined the specimen was an indeterminable juvenile polychaete, not certainly identifiable even to family [details]

Spelling Kudenov (1985:335) alters the spelling to 'glaber' which is the correct latinization assuming the genus is masculine gender. Incorrect latinizations are not inadvertent errors, thus not corrected (Art.32.5.1), but definite gender suffix mistakes can be. Hartman & Fauchald, 1971 gave no information on the etymology or derivation of either the genus or species. Probably we can assume the genus was intended as masculine as Lipobranchius seems to be, and thus Kudenov would be correct that the species-group name should have been as 'glaber' (and not 'glabra' or 'glabrum'. However, 'glabrus' is an incorrect latinization, and doesn't change. 'glabrus' has been used a number of times in the past, presumably from authors thinking of glabrous (smooth), but it seems dubious as correct Latin. [details]

Type specimen The monograph does not state where the type material is deposited. Blake (2015) revised the holotype, stating that it is deposited at the LACM-AHF, USA, with the reference number LACM-AHF 896.  [details]
