Status Delle Chiaje published a plate with a figure captioned N. cuprea (for Nereis cuprea) for Gulf of Naples. Hartman (1959: 257...
Status Delle Chiaje published a plate with a figure captioned N. cuprea (for Nereis cuprea) for Gulf of Naples. Hartman (1959: 257 catalogue treats this as a new taxon, now indeterminable, authored by Delle Chiaje. However, the figure is a Diopatra, and it is clear that Delle Chiaje is using the existing name of Nereis cuprea Bosc, 1802, also a Diopatra. Later Delle Chiaje (1841: 97-98) uses the name Nereis neapolitana, clearly indicating the name is authored by him, and that Edwards (?Milne Edwards) had distinguished the species from N. cuprea Bosc. Claparède (1868: 432) explains in a footnote that Delle Chiaje replaced the identification of N. cuprea with the new name N. neapolitana. Thus, it is unfortunate (and unusual) that Hartman missed this information and reported a Nereis cuprea authored by Delle Chaije. This apparent homonym does not exist. [details]
