Etymology The specific epithet modesta (masculine: modestus) is a Latin adjective meaning 'modest' or 'discrete', and refers presumably to the small size of the worm in comparison with other species in the genus: "La longueur est de 40 mm sur 1 mm de large. Cette espèce serait donc de petite taille par rapport aux autres du genre. [...] Il faut cependant noter que tous nos échantillons sont de petite taille (P. berkeleyae peut atteindre 300 mm) et il nous a semblé préférable de les distinguer des autres espèces connues" (Intes & Le Loeuff, 1975: 299). [details]
