Taxonomy Kinberg's original description of Neanthes vaalii appears to have no taxonomically useful information. Here it is: "Lobus cephalicus fere rotundatus fronte mediocri latitudine, brevi, oculi mediocres; antennae dimidiam partem lobi cephalici aequantes; cirri tentaculares paris 3:ii segmentum 8 attingunt". Hartman's (1948) review of Kinberg's types does not comment on Neanthes vaalii, instead deferring to Augener's (1922: 20) review of the Australian species. Augener reports the head is missing, but infers the paragnaths are all conical, perhaps just from Kinberg's placement of the species in genus Neanthes. Augener (1922, review of Australian types) has a figure of a parapodium and 2 hetergomph chaetae, and refers to his own synonymy in the same year (Augener 1922: 20, Hamburg Australian polychaetes) of his Nereis albanyensis to junior synonym of N. vaalii [with spelling 'corrected' as 'vaali'.)  [details]
