Etymology the combination 'brevispinis' means short thorns (plural), as spinis is thorns (not thorn) in historic Latin usages (an ablative plural according to Stearn), thus the species name cannot properly be corrected to singular 'brevispina' as in some authors usages as that would change the meaning. Both Amphicteis and Hypania are feminine genera, so there would be no change of ending for the recombination. We must assume that Grube had better understanding of Latin than we do today, and keep his 'spinis' spelling. [details]

Ecology Glasby et al. (2009) includes Amphicteis brevicirris (as Hypania brevicirris) as a non-marine but salt-tolerant species of saline lakes, citing Birula (1897), Annenkova (1929a, 1930), Wesenberg-Lund (1958). Spelling Comments on an Incorrect original spelling. Amphicteis brevispinis is misspelled as 'brivispinis' in Grube's text but spelled as 'brevispinis' as expected in the figure captions. Subsequent authors ignored the misspelling and used 'brevispinis'. Grube describes the paleal spines as "latius spiniformes, breviter acuminatae, radiantes, protinus versae", thus brevis (= short) was intended as the spelling of the first word of the adjectival species name and the 'brivispinis' is due to a printer's error. Article 32.5.1 for correcting incorrect original spellings applies, and Amphicteis brevispinis is the required original spelling. The Hartman catalogue (p.483) also appears to have noticed the incorrect original spelling, but compounds the error by reporting it as being 'brispinis' [details]
