Status Kolbasova et al (2023) record Antarctica specimens from numerous sites in the Northern Antarctic Peninsula and Orkney Plateau area as Pelagobia cf. viguieri, not as P. viguieri. However, they suggest P. viguieri should be restored from synonymy with P. longicirrata, the type species of the genus. Their comments are as follows: "We propose to restore the species name “viguieri” to reduce the number of unnecessary synonyms; however, until the full revision of the genus is done, we use it [for their Antarctica specimens] with the qualifier “cf.”. This species name has been used only for the Antarctic Pelagobia; however, we propose to use it for the Arctic ones as well, because the genetic similarity between the Arctic and Antarctic samples allows us to consider them conspecific " It is not obvious what they mean by " to reduce the number of unnecessary synonyms" but perhaps they are wary of creating new names now later to be synonymized. [details]
