Nomenclature Thoosa gayi was apparently intended as new, with a 'n' following the name, but here this may indicate just a new combination. Nereis gayi Blanchard in Gay is subsequently mentioned as a synonym four lines below, preceded by a question mark. The usage by Kinberg seems for convenience best treated as a separately authored entity from N. gayi, although today it could be nomenclaturally reasonably be interpreted as just a recombination. There is no obvious reason why Kinberg would use 'gayi' as the species name (Gay edited Blanchard's Chilean annelid contribution) other than an association with Nereis gayi. Reish (1954) appears to treat the name Thoosa gayi as a recombination of the name Nereis gayi authored originally by Blanchard, but treats Kinberg's usage as distinct, thus a 'sensu' usage. Nereis gayi would be senior to N. grubei. [details]
