Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet punctata, Latin adjective meaning 'spotted', refers obviously to the presence of red or clear roundish spots on the tentacles and segments of the worm: "The tentacula are [...] prettily speckled with reddish spots. [...] [The] segments are all speckled with scarlet dots. But the peculiar marking of the dorsal surface constitutes the distinguishing character of the species. It is punctuated, in a very pretty way, with clear roundish spots, imitating lacework in their arrangement" (Johnston, 1865: 241). [details]
