Taxonomy This genus name is a mistake, based on the an illegal attempt of Burton (1934) to suppress the name Hippospongia Schulze by assigning a neotype for Spongia equina Schmidt, 1862 (the type species of Hippospongia) which was conspecific with Spongia officinalis, the type species of Spongia and thus Hippospongia became a junior synonym of Spongia. Since there are type specimens available in the Graz Museum, there can be no question of a neotype. De Laubenfels subsequent attempt to erect a new genus name for sponges assigned previously to Hippospongia is also unnecessary and the name becomes a junior synonym of Hippospongia Schulze. [details]
