Taxonomy Confused taxonomy but probably an unavailable name. Serpula muricata Born, 1780: 440 was erroneously coined for "a variant" of Serpula anguina Linnaeus, 1758. There are subsequent usages recombined in Tenagodus as a taxon inquirendam but Bieler (1992) states the name Serpula rnuricata was introduced for the 'true' anguina rather than a morphological variant (thus it cannot be applied as if it is an available name). Here is an edited quote from Bieler. "Linne's (1758:787) Serpula anguina was originally based on more than one species, and the Linnean collection contains specimens of several forrns, with no clear type specimen indicated (Hanley, 1855:448). Linne had adopted the species name from the non-binominal "Solen anguinus" of Rumphius (1705:1 25) and referred to figures in that work […] Rumphius figure shows a spiny specimen of Tenagodus […] Born (1780:4--10), possibly misled by Linne's statement in the· Museurn Ulricae (1764 :701) that the variety had a spiny shell. then confused the issue by applying the name Serpula anguina to the smooth form and introducing the name Serpula rnuricata for the true anguina."
