Authority Mytella strigata was first described by Sylvanus Hanley in 1843 as Mytilus strigatus in his ‘Catalogue of Recent Bivalve Shells’ (p. 251 published in 1843 and plate 24 species 34 published in 1856) where he attributed the species to‘Hinds in MSS’ but subsequently (in p. 388 of the same volume as an appendix) withdrew this suggestion as it was eventually not published by Hinds in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society (PZS). The same description was, however, published in the PZS by Hanley in 1844, and reprinted in the Annals of Natural History, also in 1844, leading to the often mistaken year (i.e., 1844) to which the name strigata has sometimes been assigned.  [details]
