Taxonomy Democlavia is a name for the so-called 'G4' group of Demospongiae, which encompasses the sponges not belonging to Keratosa, Verongimorpha/Myxospongiae and Haploscleromorpha. It is defined vaguely as sponges more closely related to Clathria (Microciona) prolifera than to Amphimedon queenslandica, leaving its position vis-à-vis the freshwater sponges undecided. Much work remains to be done to confirm that this is a monophyletic assemblage. [details]
