Etymology The generic name Varanusia makes reference to Varanus panoptes Storr, 1980, the yellow-spotted monitor lizard. This lizard is the best-known animal of Lizard Island, type locality of the genotype. It was due to the abundant presence of this lizard that James Cook named the island as Lizard Island in 1770, during his exploration of the east coast of Australia.  [details]
