Identification Lindgren (1897, 1898) described an Indonesian specimen as Axinella mastigophora Schmidt, 1870. There is no such name in Schmidt's work, but it is likely a misprint for Axinella mastophora Schmidt, 1870. In view of the fact that that species is from deep water off Florida, it is unlikely the same species as Lindgren's. Burton (1959) referred Lindgren's specimen to the synonymy of Phakellia radiata (Dendy, 1916). [details]
